A dagger is not a huge but an effective weapon. It was originally used by shepherds and cattle-breeders. Since the end of the IV millennium BC, the period when Kura-Araxes culture reigned in the Armenian highlands, tanged daggers, made of arsenical bronze, were widely spread over the present territory of Armenia. Later on the daggers made of tin bronze appear. Not only in the era of the middle and late Bronze Age were the bronze daggers common in the Middle East and the Caucasus, but in the early Iron Age as well, before the VIII cent. BC inclusive.
Bronze daggers found in Armenia are divided into seven types and many subtypes. Dagger TD003 can be attributed to the integral ones, i.e. to the “Lchashen” type of daggers with a tubular hilt (type N3, the fourth variant – the integral dagger with rectangular medial rib on the blade).
The blade of the dagger is of elongated triangular shape, its tip is slightly rounded, the medial rib has a convex-rectangular shape, which starts at the quillion and comes to naught at the tip. The quillion has a triangular shape formed by sloping shoulders.
The hilt is in a cylinder form on which from all four sides there are relief straight lines sloping down from top to bottom, the front ones of the lines are with notches. The front lines on the quillion end up in phallus-like embossed protuberances.
The knob is in spherical shape with openwork. The openwork is composed of triangles, the lower strip of which consists of eight perforated figures, turned with their tops up. As a result, other eight triangles are formed, which are turned down with their vertices. On each of them there are perforated small triangles which are also turned down with their vertices. The upper strip is convex, four equilateral triangles are curved. They are disposed so that their borderlines form a cross edge. The knob was once incrusted with wooden plates.
In XIV-XII cent. BC the daggers, apparently, showed the social position of their owner, the warrior, being a part of the traditional costume. During the early Iron Age the modern territory of Armenia was called Etiuni and when the soldiers of that country joined the army of The Van Kingdom the Urartu kings were calling them “huradine”. According to the information obtained from the archaeological excavations of Artik burial places, the warrior from Etiuni, in addition to a dagger, could also carry a spear, an ax, a bow and arrows on the battlefield. In the XIV-XIII cent. BC the people of Etiuni fought against the armies of Mitanni and Hittite with the help of these weapons.
