A dagger is not a huge but an effective weapon. It was originally used by shepherds and cattle-breeders. Since the end of the IV millennium BC, the period when Kura-Araxes culture reigned in the Armenian highlands, tanged daggers, made of arsenical bronze, were widely spread over the present territory of Armenia. Later on the daggers made of tin bronze appear. Not only in the era of the middle and late Bronze Age were the bronze daggers common in the Middle East and the Caucasus, but in the early Iron Age as well, before the VIII cent. BC inclusive.
Bronze daggers found in Armenia are divided into seven types and many subtypes.
Dagger TD007 can be attributed to the integral daggers, i.e. to the “Lchashen” type of daggers with tubular hilt (type № 3). The blade of the dagger is of elongated triangular shape, with a slightly rounded tip. It has three ribs, among which the middle one stands out. At the top, below the ricasso, these ribs are joined by two arch-like notches, which gradually narrow and end at the tip. Such kind of blade design resembles a dagger from the former Echmiadzin museum, which, however, had not three but two grooves. Echmiadzin dagger was close to the fourth version of the third type, where the integral hilt was joined to the blade by a rhomboid plate, which passes into the hollow trunk of the tube with rounded side plates.
The ricasso of this dagger, which is not high, is equipped with a deep groove, and the hollow hilt itself stands out among similar integral daggers, as it is decorated with a special pattern. The hilt is of a cylinder form, it gets slightly narrowed in the middle. Below the mid-hilt there is a perforated rounded hole with skirting, to which two narrowing grooves from the top and bottom adjoin. Three ribs are designed in such a way that they make an angle-like pattern with the middle rib. This design also resembles the hilt of the fourth version of the third type of daggers. Special features of the design of the blade and the hilt let us assume that this is an imitation of the fourth type of daggers; therefore, it can be dated to a later period, i.e. IX-VIII cent. BC.
The knob is high. It is hollow of slightly elongated hemispherical shape. The circumference of the knob is covered with ten oval notches. Thus, the dagger is made in a special way, by using a wax mold for the hilt and the knob.
The daggers during that time, apparently, showed the social position of their owner, the warrior, and were a part of the traditional costume. During the early Iron Age and Urartu period the modern territory of Armenia was called Etiuni and the warriors of that country were called “huradine” by the Van kings when they joined their army. According to the information obtained from the archaeological excavations of Artik burial places, the warrior from Etiuni, in addition to a dagger, could also carry a spear, an ax, a bow and arrows on the battlefield. In the IX–VIII cent. BC the people of Etiuni fought against the armies of the Cimmerians, the Scythians, and the Medes with the help of these weapons.
